Creamy fish taco sauce in a stack of bowls.

I love a good mahi mahi or cod fish taco. Any time they’re on the menu at a restaurant, that’s what I’m going order.

One of my favorite things about fish tacos are the toppings. There’s usually a coleslaw and some sort of pico de gallo or mango salsa. And they’ve got to have a great fish taco sauce!

This taco sauce recipe is variation of the one we shared years ago on Berly’s Kitchen. The only difference is this one uses a combination of sour cream and mayo, and the original uses all mayo.

The added sour cream gives this sauce a slightly thinner texture with a more mellow flavor similar to crema. It also tones down the spices a bit. So, it’s perfect for anyone who loves a light and creamy sauce without a lot of spices.

It’s makes a lot, so you can serve it with fish tacos, baked cod, sheet pan salmon, or oven baked French fries. It makes a fantastic dipping sauce (so good with carrot sticks!).

Kim’s Tips

Tips
  • Make it spicy! Add a pinch of cayenne or some chili powder for added heat.
  • Make it smoky! Extra smoked paprika or chipotle powder give this sauce smokiness and flavor.
  • Use mayo in place of sour cream! This sauce tastes great without sour cream. Just skip it and use mayonnaise instead in the same amount.

FAQs

Can I use Greek yogurt instead of sour cream or mayo?

Yes, you can definitely use Greek yogurt in place of sour cream or mayo. However, it’s important to note that this substitution will alter the flavor profile of your sauce slightly.

Greek yogurt tends to have a tangier taste compared to sour cream or mayo, which could give your fish taco sauce a bit more zest. While the consistency should remain relatively similar, expect a subtle change in taste if you opt for Greek yogurt.
