Those photos are from a different recipe. That is not the result from following this recipe as written; particularly adding the topping before baking. I thought that seemed odd but went against my better judgement and tried it, anyway. The result isn’t bad, it’s just not what anyone familiar with German chocolate cake would expect. It’s not the gooey, sticky frosting you’re used to but, rather, cakey brownies with a slightly sweeter brownie layer on top and toasted coconut on top of that. The brownies themselves aren’t horrible but you’ve almost certainly made better if you’ve been baking for any length of time.

Like I said, it’s not bad… but it’s probably not what you’re looking for. There are better brownie recipes out there; give this one a pass and find a brownie recipe you like and a good recipe for coconut-pecan frosting and put the frosting on after baking, like a sane person. You’ll be much happier with the results.

    1. Hi John,

I’m going to address each point so other readers can follow along:

      1. The photos are from this exact recipe, made exactly as written. For someone using a fake name, it’s pretty bold to claim otherwise.
      2. Yes, the topping goes on before baking. I didn’t want another copycat German chocolate brownie recipe.
      3. It’s not cake and shouldn’t bake like one. These brownies are fudgy with a gooey frosting layer, except around the edges where it crisps up a bit. You can absolutely spread the frosting over the baked brownies if that’s preferred.
      4. It’s fine if this recipe wasn’t for you, but telling other readers they won’t enjoy it is presumptuous.

Hope you find a brownie recipe that you love!
