Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into 1-inch cubes. Add them to a large pot, cover with cold water, and sprinkle in a little salt.

Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce the heat and simmer until fork-tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
Drain well and let the potatoes sit for a minute to steam dry in a mixing bowl.
Add the butter, milk, and salt.
