In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and nuts if using. Set aside.

Use an apple corer to remove the center ensuring that you leave enough of the bottom intact so the filling doesn’t run out.

Spoon equal portions of filling into each apple, and pack it tightly in place. Pour water around the apples.

Bake at 375°F for 1 hour or until the apples are soft.

Serve warm with your favorite ice cream, if desired.
